How to Know God’s Plan for Your Life

Quite frankly, this will probably be just the first of many blogs on this topic. It is just too big to cover extensively in a short blog. But here we go!

This question is one of the main questions I think every believer asks throughout their lives.  I pray for people all the time and one of the main prayer requests I receive is asking God what His plans and purposes are for themselves.  Many Christians are frustrated because they love God, read their Bibles, serve in their churches and yet they are unsatisfied.  Why is this?  Psalm 139 shows us why this question lies within our hearts.  The entire chapter is an amazing picture of God’s love for you, but I am specifically looking at verses 15 and 16.

“You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,

as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.

You saw me before I was born.

Every day of my life was recorded in your book.

Every moment was laid out

before a single day had passed.”

In our spirit we know that God has a specific plan for our lives.  This plan was custom made for how God created each of us be.  So how do we know this plan?  Let me tell you a story.  When William and I heard the call to follow God into ministry, we had been seeking God diligently.  There was a period of 18 months to two years where we sought God fervently.  The more we learned about Him the more we fell in love with Him.  For anyone who has ever been in love, you know that there comes a point when you are willing to give your entire life to that person.   This is the point where the two decide that the only step is to be together forever in marriage—two become one.  This same step is imperative to knowing God’s call for your life.  The deeper we fell in love with God the more open our hand to Him became.  We stopped dictating to Him all of our wants and desires.  Instead of “I want this” it became “God whatever you want”.  At this point in our spiritual walk, the Lord was beckoning us to seek Him for the next steps.  We knew He was speaking to us so we took communion and asked God what He had to tell us.  The prayer went something like this, “Lord we give you our entire lives.  We will hold nothing back from you.  If you tell us to move away from all we have ever known.  If you tell us to sell the house and give the money away…. whatever you want…. God all we want is your plan”.  This prayer came straight out of our hearts.  It was formed in us as we spent time in His presence—“For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13) These were not empty words like some sort of a formula.  We sincerely cried out to the Lord and this was our hearts cry. I think we said something to God like “we need to know in three days”.  Now I am not saying you should put time limits on God but we were learning and growing.  He told us in one day!  The rest of the story I will have to tell you another time as this blog post may become a book if I keep going.  The main point of this story is that if you truly want to know God’s plans and purposes for your life you must come to Him with an open hand.  The Lord tells us to worship Him in spirit and in truth.  To worship God in truth means to hold nothing back from Him.  If you truly want to know God’s Plans for your life then come to him and seek Him with your whole heart.  Allow Him to form His desires on the inside of you.  Their will come a point where, just like for William and myself, you too will know what He is calling you to do.  This is not a one-time event. Many times you will seek God for His plans and the process will be the same.  Come before Him seeking Him and you will see the desires of His heart…. your heart!  As always I love you!  Thank you for reading.  I pray you are filled with the most amazing blessings God has in store for you.  After all, walking with God is the most wonderful adventure there is!
